The Bali Provincial Government has issued a statement emphasizing that the current draft revisions of Indonesia’s criminal code (RKUHP) has not yet been passed and urging both tourists and tourism operators on the island to continue activities as usual.

A lawmaker from the House of Representatives (DPR) claimed yesterday that foreigners visiting Indonesia “need not worry” about articles criminalizing sex outside of marriage contained in the draft revision to Indonesia’s criminal code (RKUHP), highlighting that charges can only be made by immediate family members of those involved.

Prakob Seetasang and Adison Phonlamat, two Thai nationals who were allegedly caught at the Bali airport smuggling a total of 1.08 kg of crystal meth inside of their stomachs in May, could be facing nearly two decades in prison after the prosecutor in their case demanded that they be sentenced to 18 years.

Hundreds of university students held a rally in Denpasar today to protest a number of pressing issues that have troubled Indonesia in recent months. Under the rallying call of #BaliTidakDiam (Bali is not silent), the students voiced their opposition to the revision of the country’s criminal code that would criminalize sex outside marriage and demanded action to end forest fires ravaging Sumatra and Kalimantan as well as the ongoing human rights crisis in Papua.

Responding to a suggestion made last week by the Indonesian Tour Guide Association (HPI) that a moratorium be placed on visitors coming to Nusa Penida due to a number of foreign tourists dying in accidents at the popular tourist destination recently, Bali Vice Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, or Cok Ace, said today that the provincial government has yet to consider that option.

Dozens of people in Denpasar participated in a rally earlier today in support of the revised law governing the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). They are among the few who have demonstrated in favor of the revisions, which have otherwise been met with widespread public resistance across the country over fears that they will weaken the independent anti-graft agency.
