The Mayor of Denpasar yesterday urged the city’s residents to refrain from returning to their hometowns and stay at home instead, as part of an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Bali.

A female nurse who has tested positive for COVID-19 reportedly went home to Tabanan regency while waiting for her test results, an official said today.

“Today in Tabanan there’s a patient who’s tested positive with COVID-19, working at the Buleleng Regional General Hospital,” said I Nyoman Suratmika, an official from Tabanan regency, as quoted by Kompas.

After previously calling on people to continue staying at home on the day after Nyepi earlier this week, the Bali provincial government has extended the appeal until at least March 30, as part of an effort to help contain the spread of COVID-19 on the island.

Whether you’re a local resident or a tourist, most people spent the Balinese Day of Silence or Nyepi on Wednesday by staying in, keeping their lights off and noise down, making use of the opportunity to join in on a day meant to self-reflect.

Religious authorities in Bali have called on local residents to remain calm, following viral news that the drum tower at a temple in Klungkung regency sounded itself and fueling local superstitions that it signifies a supernatural warning.

Two people under monitoring for COVID-19 in Bali reportedly “ran away” from a quarantine facility earlier this week. The incident, which quickly made its way to the news cycle, has sparked a huge reaction and backlash on social media amid heightened concerns about the spread of the viral disease on the island.
