An unidentified Spanish man reportedly attempted to steal groceries from a supermarket in Seminyak earlier this week, but was later caught and questioned by staff before running away and leaving the items behind.

The incident has been confirmed by Nyoman Gatra yesterday, who is with the Denpasar Police. It occurred on Monday at the Bintang Supermarket, wherein the foreigner took a number of items — including olive oil, tomatoes, and mushrooms — worth about IDR 283,000 (US$19).

“The foreigner was caught by the staff at Bintang Supermarket and was then taken to their storage for a statement, [but] at the end of the interrogation he immediately ran and left the items,” Gatra said.

According to reports, the staff then pursued him and scuffled with the foreigner when he was found hiding at a temple in the area. He was taken back to the supermarket, where he coincidentally met other foreigners who reportedly offered to pay for the items. The supermarket did not appear to pursue any charges against the Spanish man, and he was let go afterwards.

“He was running low on his food stock. To the public in this current situation anything can happen. When it comes to matters of the stomach, there’s no distinction between foreigner or Indonesian. [Everyone] should be careful,” Gatra continued.
