Officials from the Muntigunung traditional village (desa adat) in Bali’s Karangasem regency are reportedly investigating a case of incestuous rape, in which a 46-year-old man allegedly impregnated his 19-year-old daughter.

According to a report from Kompas, the incident occurred back in 2015 and the daughter, identified by her initials NNG, gave birth to a child in 2016.

Village authorities from Muntigunung received a report about the incident in 2017 and proceeded to hold an extrajudicial trial then, but the perpetrator, identified by his initials JKA, and NNG denied the allegations. JKA instead said that NNG was raped while working at a clove plantation by a masked man, as reported by Nusa Bali

However, after mounting pressure from village residents for village officials to process the case further, the case was reopened last month.

“There was a demand from the public to resolve this, so we held another trial. We interrogated [the victim and perpetrator] with nine other people and they confessed,” Made Regeg, a representative and figure from Muntigunung traditional village, told Kompas.

As the incident is perceived as having tainted Muntigunung, a ceremony was held last Friday. This reportedly involved a symbolic marriage ritual and followed by a cleansing ritual. JKA and NNG were figuratively drowned during the ceremony and therefore considered deceased.

“We cleansed all the shrines and the expenses are the responsibility of the perpetrator. But he can no longer come to the shrines [in the village],” Regeg said.

Meanwhile, police in Kubu district, where Muntigunung is located, said they have not received any reports about the alleged incestuous rape, but were aware that the incident had occurred a while ago.

As reported by local media outlets, JKA will likely face traditional sanctions for his alleged crime, details of which will be decided on a meeting of village officials scheduled for May 13.
