A short video showing a foreign woman buck naked while crossing a street in Canggu has gone viral on social media, sparking a divisive discussion about respecting cultures and local customs here in Bali while also prompting local authorities to act.

The video, seemingly taken by a witness on the scene, captures two foreign women, one of whom was fully dressed while filming her friend, who was completely nude as she crossed a small street in Canggu. From the visible shop signs in the video, it appears to have been taken on Jalan Pantai Berawa.

“We don’t post positive stuff, what we post is always negative. I’m sure there are tourists doing positive things for Bali.”

“People in my village are naked at the public holy baths. Many do the same thing after a day of work in the subak (irrigation system for paddy fields in Bali). Sometimes families do it. Just take the time to really visit the island. Nudity is not a problem for Balinese people the same way as for some tourists who complain on Facebook.”

“There is no need to shame anybody publicly. Just tell them politely what’s ok and what’s not. Maybe every tourist [should be handed] a paper with rules in Bali upon arrival. They will learn something new and it will limit these problems.”

“[People] like this should be arrested, fined, deported and banned from Indonesia for life. Without acting strictly we are just jokes to them.”

Local authorities are now on the case too, with the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) reportedly attempting to track the foreigners down.

I Gusti Agung Kerta Suryanegara, who heads Satpol PP in Badung told Detik yesterday that they are collecting more information.

“It’s disrupting order, which means it was inappropriate [and] not in accordance with our culture and nature. It’s causing a stir,” Suryanegara said.
