Officers from the Denpasar Police have arrested a 25-year-old man named Arjuna Wiranata for allegedly stabbing a Spanish woman during a robbery attempt near Padang Padang beach in Uluwatu last month.

“The suspect is being charged with Article 365 [of Indonesia’s Criminal Code] which carries a maximum sentence of nine years in prison,” Denpasar Police Chief Ruddi Setiawan said during a press conference earlier today, as quoted in a statement.

Ruddi explained that Arjuna had escaped to his hometown in Sumbawa Besar, West Nusa Tenggara after committing the crime. Police then managed to track him down and bring him back to Bali.

However, Arjuna attempted to resist and escape when police asked him to show where he had thrown the machete he used to stab the foreigner, which he claimed was discarded near Padang Padang beach. He was shot in the leg as a result. Authorities are still looking for the weapon, Ruddi said.

The victim, a 40-year-old Spanish woman identified by her initials RPL, was stabbed multiple times with a machete on Nov. 21. The details of the incident were initially shared by a person claiming to be RPL’s friend on Facebook, hoping to rally help to find the perpetrator. According to a report from Australian news outlet Nine News, RPL was born in Barcelona, Spain, but holds an Australian passport.

Police confirmed that Arjuna had been stalking RPL that afternoon, and took a chance while she was off guard to grab her bag. Arjuna then stabbed her six times before snatching the bag and running away.

According to reports, RPL is now out of the hospital after being taken to a local hospital immediately following the gruesome incident, as she had reportedly suffered deep wounds.
