Police in Bali’s Badung regency have arrested two underage boys, both of whom now potentially face life sentences for allegedly killing a man on Sunday.

“They face lifetime imprisonment. The suspects are not facing the death penalty because they are underage,” Chief of Badung Police, Police Superintendent Yudith Satriya Hananta, said yesterday, as reported by Tribun-Bali.

The suspects, identified as Putu BWS and Dewa PEAM, are both 15 years old. Police are still investigating the case and said the suspects are undergoing a psychological examination.

Police said the teenagers are responsible for attacking two men, I Kadek Roy Adinata and Agus Gede Nurhana Putra, with a machete. Roy died because of his injuries while Agus is reportedly in critical condition and still being treated at Mangusada General Hospital.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday and reportedly started as a drunken brawl between two groups of young men at Warung Madu, a cafe in Badung.

Yudith explained that Putu and Dewa had already returned to the former’s home after someone intervened in their quarrel, but decided to go back to the cafe because one of their friends was left behind, bringing a machete along with him.

“When they saw the victim, they kicked [the motorcycle], which caused them to fall. When the victims fell, they were immediately hacked,” Yudith said.

Laorens R Heselo from the Badung Police said that Putu took the machete from Dewa’s hands and was the one who hacked Roy to death while Dewa watched from his motorbike.
