Police in Bali earlier today said that a total of 32 people had been arrested in August for their involvement in drug-related cases, all of whom now face charges under Indonesia’s notoriously harsh narcotics laws.

At a press conference in Denpasar, Police Chief Commissioner Ruddi Setiawan explained that police had seized over 170 grams of shabu (crystal meth), 11 ecstasy pills, and about 38 grams of marijuana throughout the month of August.

“There are 32 suspects from 29 different cases. Of those 32 suspects, nine were acting as dealers or couriers while the rest were arrested for using drugs,” Ruddi said, as quoted by Detik.

Ruddi added that most of the drug dealers and users were from Java and that the suspects include two foreigners: one from China and another from Germany.

The German national, identified by his initials DL, was reportedly arrested for using marijuana, which he’d ingested using an electronic cigarette.

According to Detik, DL has traveled back and forth from Germany to Bali often and that he has an Indonesian wife. Police said DL had brought the drugs from his country to the island.

Under Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law, the suspects individually face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
