A hospital in Bali’s Badung regency accidentally mislabeled a corpse from its mortuary last week. It was only when family members were set to begin the deceased’s cremation process that they realized the body belonged to someone else.

As reported by iNews, the label for the body of I Nyoman D was mistakenly placed on the body of another man, identified as I Nyoman L.

I Nyoman D’s nephew, Nyoman Gede Budiasa, said that they didn’t do a final check at the Mangusada General Hospital when picking up the body on Aug. 27.

“We didn’t open up the body bag [to check] and headed straight for the cremation. After we opened it there, we saw that there were many differences in his features and confirmed that it was indeed someone else,” Budiasa told iNews yesterday.

News of the incident went viral on social media, with people sharing a clip of the unfortunate discovery.

According to Budiasa, I Nyoman D’s body has been temporarily kept at Mangusada as the family waits for an auspicious day to conduct his cremation.

After discovering that the body they brought was someone else’s, the family returned the mislabeled body to the hospital, retrieved the correct one, and proceeded with the rest of the funeral.

“We apologize for the error and oversight of our officer that resulted in this unfortunate switch,” I Nyoman Gunarta, chief executive at the Mangusada General Hospital, said yesterday.
