A 62-year-old man was killed in a car accident earlier today after he reportedly lost control of his car due to a burst tire, leading to the vehicle falling off a cliff in Gianyar regency.

According to a report from Tribun-Bali, the accident occurred at around 11am and the victim, who has been identified as I Nyoman Asta Antara, was immediately evacuated to Sanjiwani General Hospital.

“His tire burst while he was driving, so there was a loss of control and the car ended up hitting a bridge guardrail,” First Police Inspector Ketut Naryawan from Gianyar Police told Tribun-Bali.

Naryawan said that the car fell about 10 meters off a cliff into a river, adding that the area was somewhat prone to accidents because the road curved on an uphill slope.

In a video, local residents appear to approach the car in an attempt to help, while the car, which appears to have been badly damaged, sits in a river.

Asta was reportedly conscious while he was taken to the hospital and received treatment for a short time upon arrival.

“But he died not long after. The doctors said he sustained heavy injuries to his chest,” Police Commissioner Ketut Suastika, who heads the Gianyar Police, said.
