What happens when a victim becomes a suspect? There’s no definitive answer for that one, but we might see how that plays out in the case of two Balinese men who have filed competing reports with the police and have both been named suspects in each other’s cases.

Just last week, forty-nine-year-old Dewa Putu Witana filed a report with the Buleleng Police after he was allegedly struck in the face with a sickle by his own neighbor, an assault reportedly brought on by a rowdy gambling session.

In an unexpected turn of events, that same neighbor – who has been identified as Yoyok – filed his own police report against Witana and his cousin, Dewa Komang Ardita, to the Singaraja Police, claiming he was the victim of the cousins harassment and assault.

According to a report from Radar Bali, Witana was named a suspect by the Singaraja Police last Saturday, whereas Yoyok had been named a suspect by the Buleleng Police earlier in the same week.

Singaraja Police Chief Anak Agung Wiranata Kusuma was quoted in the report as saying that strong evidence and eyewitness accounts led to Witana also being named a suspect.

Witana’s son, 19-year-old Dewa Made Cani, has also been named a suspect by the Singaraja Police in the case.

“Each of them claims to be truthful. Let them prove it in court,” Wiranata said.

Though Witana sustained heavy injuries after being struck on the face with a sickle, the police say their investigation revealed that Witana had also attacked Yoyok.

“We tried to mediate, but it wasn’t fruitful. So we need to continue with the legal process … We don’t see who’s been more hurt, it’s about what has been done and now they need to take responsibility for their actions,” Wiranata said, as quoted by Tribun-Bali.

Under Indonesia’s criminal code, both Witana and Yoyok could face up to 32 months in prison.
