Bali Police have arrested a 49-year-old man, who has been identified as HKB, for allegedly spreading hate speech and plotting treason through messages sent via WhatsApp.

“The suspect has been arrested since May 14.

The Bali Police is currently investigating the case further,” Bali Police spokesman Hengky Widjaja said, as quoted by Tribun-Bali.

Detik reported that HKB used to work as a teacher. He was arrested after the police received a report about one of his messages containing hate speech and a call to commit treason, which had been shared with several WhatsApp groups. The message was screen captured and later used as evidence by the police.

Authorities have charged him under the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law, but he could also potentially be found guilty for violating Indonesia’s criminal code or the 2008 law on the elimination of racial and ethnic discrimination.

“Prabowo’s real masses are way bigger, reaching almost 70 percent, so fight with ‘people power’ because they are the one violating the constitutional first, prepare jihadists [and] take back power before the largest Muslim nation in the world is handed over to China,” read one of HKB’s messages, according to a report from Detik.

In another message, HKB called on Muslims to strengthen their own community to “deal with anti-Islam communities,” which according to the message include China and communists.

The “people power” movement — fueled by failed presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto’s repeated and unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud — played a prominent role following the April 17 elections in Indonesia. The movement peaked last week in the form of post-election protests that turned into violent in riots in Jakarta – in which at least eight people were killed and hundreds injured – after the General Election Commission (KPU) announced the official results on May 21 certifying that President Joko Widodo had won re-election.  Since then, police have arrested numerous individuals on charges of treason and spreading hoaxes connected to the riots, including several senior Prabowo supporters.
