A fire broke out at the Denpasar Vehicle Document Registration Center (locally known as Samsat) a few minutes after midnight today, burning down nine rooms including offices containing documents for driver’s licenses and license plates.

The fire erupted at 12:04am at the Samsat, which is located on Cok Agung Tresna Street in Sumerta Kelod, Denpasar. Firefighters managed to put out the fire about one-and-a-half-hours later.

“The fire engulfed nine rooms […] and the losses [are estimated at] IDR500 million (US$34,835),” Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head I Made Rentin said today.

No casualties were reported from the fire. However, the Samsat’s office for commercial driver’s license applications reportedly burned down to the ground, as well as the center’s cafeteria.

Local outlets cited an electric short circuit as the likely reason behind the incident.
