Bali is now included in Indonesia’s priority list for COVID-19 handling, head of the national task force Doni Monardo said today, as the worrying spike in coronavirus infections this month has resulted in a high hospital bed occupancy rate on the island.

According to official data displayed during a live broadcast earlier today, Bali province currently has the third-highest bed occupancy rate in the country with 61.6 percent, which has surpassed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation of less than 60 percent. Jakarta comes fourth with 60.6 percent, while Riau and Banten topped the chart with 73 percent and 68 percent, respectively.

The numbers were last updated on Sept. 24, and reflected 835 treated patients in Bali and 1,356 available ICU and isolation beds for COVID-19 patients.

On Sept. 10, Chief of Bali Health Agency Ketut Suarjaya said that  Bali is running out of hospital beds, following high numbers of new coronavirus cases daily that more than doubled what was reported the previous week.

It was previously reported that Bali had 778 hospital beds to treat COVID-19 patients, and the caseload this month has since prompted officials to increase hospital bed capacity and designate more health facilities to handle coronavirus patients.

Bali reported 107 additional COVID-19 cases today, bringing the provincial total to 8,639. More than 1,200 people are currently in treatment, and another 263 have died from the viral disease.
